Lance Bass Recalls Fellow *NSYNC Member Chris Kirkpatrick Confronting Him Over His Sexuality
Lance Bass is now an out and proud gay gentleman but back during his *NSYNC days, that definitely wasn’t the case.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of the album No Strings Attached, Lance spoke with Vulture about some of his memories from that time. He recalled that he was “super in the closet” and couldn’t even admit to himself that he was gay.
So when his fellow boyband member Chris Kirkpatrick confronted him, he was pretty shell-shocked. While discussing the music video discharge for “It’s Gonna Be Me,” he explained,
“It was a big day for me because it was the first day someone asked me if I was gay. Chris Kirkpatrick sat me down and said, ‘Hey dude, are you gay?’ No one had ever asked me that.”
He continued,
“I was super in the closet and way too young to even know or nurture what was happening. But I recall getting so freaked out on that set because he caught me so off guard. I’m sure at that point people were wondering — so why don’t you have a girlfriend? It was very blunt. It scared me. I said, ‘No, what

Bass, 45, explained that from a youthful age he’d heard stories of people being murdered because they were same-sex attracted, and was taught that “it was caused by the devil.”

“As a very religious person growing up, you know, I wanted to do everything I could not to go scorch in hell,” he recalled. “I would cry like every night. You comprehend, I would pray, ‘Please wake up not being homosexual. Please wake up being attracted to girls.’ Which is like a unhappy thing to position on a small kid.”

Danielle Fishel Reveals Which NSYNC Member Told Her Lance Bass Was Gay While They Were Dating
If you are of a certain age (re: old enough to rent a car, too young to remember the first Bush administration), then you probably remember swiping on your root beer-flavored Chapstick, lining up a few extra butterfly clips in your hair, and turning to the latest issue of YM magazine to see Danielle Fishel and Lance Bass‘s prom photos. Along with Britney and Justin, Katie Holmes and Chris Klein, or Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze, Jr., the two were one of the ur-couples of the late 1990s and early aughts, and with nice reason: Fishel was well-known as an American sweetheart for her role as the free-spirited, amazingly coiffed Topanga in Boy Meets World, while Bass stole hearts as the deep-voiced, spiky-haired cutie in NSYNC.
But as we would discover two decades later, more was going on with those cute prom photos than met the eye. Bass, who had grown up in the church, was struggling with his sexuality and the feelings of guilt and shame that arrive with being a sex symbol with a secret in the spotlight; Fishel was unaware of this and had planned to use her Prom Ni
