Oliver Stark on Leaning Into 9-1-1’s ‘Silly,’ Finding His ‘Focus’ and Playing a ‘Bisexual Bi-Con’ (Exclusive)
9-1-1 star Oliver Stark knows the responsibility that comes with representing the LGBTQIA+ community on screen; his character, Evan “Buck” Buckley, came out as double attraction on the firefighter procedural last year. And yet despite the newfound popularity — and plenty of brand fresh eyes on the show — Stark rejects any “pressure” to play the arc perfectly.

But when I’m in my day to sunlight at work, I don’t think of it in those regards. I just think of it as, ‘Let me just play Buck, and this is what he’s going through and this is what he’s dealing with at the moment.’ And that i

Oliver Stark, who plays Buck on ABC’s 9-1-1 took to social media tracking the series’s 100th episode, sharing that he’s “humbled and overwhelmed” by the positive response to his character’s surprise (to some) same-sex kiss. While Buck has been a part of the first responder procedural for all seven seasons, this latest episode is the first official exploration of the character’s bisexuality, by way of a kiss shared with his new friend Tommy (Louis Ferrigno Jr.).
“I’ve decipher so many of your messages and I couldn’t be prouder,” he wrote in an Instagram story, before addressing the concurrent negative reaction as adv. “If you are one of the smaller community of people commenting on my posts about how this has ruined the show, I would prefer you to know that I truly don’t look after. Oliver Stark opens up about playing attracted to both genders firefighter
British actor Oliver Stark has opened up about wanting to be “representative in a positive way” when playing bisexual firefighter in American procedural drama 9-1-1.
The 9-1-1 actor’s on-screen character came out as attracted to both genders last year and Oliver recently explained how he approaches the role.
Oliver, 33, mentioned he enjoyed being described as a “bicon” – a portmanteau pos combining the words “bisexual” and “icon” to describe a well-regarded bisexual star, role model or fictional character.
“There’s identity and there’s a want to act good, obviously, and for (Buck) to be representative in a positive way. But I don’t put too much pressure on myself,” Oliver explained. “Somebody called me a ‘bisexual bicon’ in an interview last year, which I kind of loved.”
Instead of worrying about misrepresenting the Homosexual community, Oliver added his biggest priority is focusing on how to portray his firefighting ethics, Buck, as authentically as possible.
“When I’m in my day-to-day at work, I don’t think of it in those regards. I just think of it as, ‘Let me just play Buck, and this is what he’s going through and this is
