It’s a Dog’s Being — and This is Why Lgbtq+ Men Need a Pooch, Too
Sometimes a furry friend can help mend a broken heart — or even fix a relationship. But their biggest present may be the lessons they train about second chances.
The moment I woke up, I realized I’d made a terrible mistake. The previous day I’d been looking for a pooch to fill the hole in my being left by the boyfriend I recently broke up with. I wasn’t sure I saw any I was ready to commit to. But after sleeping on it, I realized that the one big brown goofy mutt I’d seen was the dog for me.
I began to panic: What if someone else came along and snatched my dog? I couldn’t abide that, so I spent the whole morning hunting him down to a PetSmart in South Philly where he was appearing at an adoption event. Making my way to the back of the store, I filled out the paperwork. I named him Scooby and took him home.
That was 13 years ago. You don’t always get the chance to go assist and correct a mistake like the one I made initially overlooking Scooby. The past dozen-plus years would possess been far less fulfilling and joyous if I hadn’t had that first do-over with him. It would be the first of many.

So the folks in the shelter were great and create a place for him immediately."

The Gay Dog A Story
Had my Uncle Ernst lived, he would be seventy-five this spring. He was forty-five when I first saw him, but the superior of his head was already bald. As he sat in our drawing room with Father’s sister, whom he wanted to marry, I climbed on his lap to kiss his bald pate. He smelled good, and looked well fed and joyful, unlike the rest of the grown-ups in Germany after the First World War. Thirty years ago I was quite ancient enough to know that he could not possibly own the green wig which he promised to wear for the wedding. But he was the caring of guy who in spite of everything might turn up with one, even if he had to rent it.
Uncle Ernst married Father’s sister in the Frankfort town hall, the antique Römer, and without green wig. When we came out of the dark building, the spring sun was shining and Uncle Ernst sent the cars away. The wedding party walked all the way home, bride and bridegroom in front, the repose trailing them at a distance, and everybody saying what an Unikum my uncle was. Now and then he halted to show his new wife something in a window or to point with his cane at a balcony or a piece of sculpture. He even stopped a while to chat
