Anonymous employee accuses RuneScape of kowtowing to Trump as it puts the kibosh on new Celebration events: 'The content… is now controversial in a way it didn't used to be'

Players are in an uproar after an anonymous Jagex employee, speaking to Pink News, accused the RuneScape and Old University RuneScape (OSRS) dev of deliberately curtailing its Pride Month celebrations in response to the American government's assault on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The announcement that RuneScape and OSRS wouldn't be running—or would at least be dramatically scaling back—their Pride content apparently came from novel CEO Jon Bellamy in April. Bellamy, who was appointed Jagex CEO in March, caused a rupture between staff and Jagex leadership with an announcement that the corporation would be more-or-less skipping Pride in order to fixate on "what players wanted."

Staff were upset, and noted that a great deal of the operate for Pride content was either already completed or a very light raise. Some asked to volunteer outside of work hours to implement the content.

the reason we need parade events.
Imagine for a moment that for hundreds of years your sexuality or gender individuality is seen as an abomination, an abnormality, and you are shunned for it. Enter the year 2020, where people are no longer shunned for this, but are in fact, in positions of authority to build it known to the common that we're just like them. Now, in the year of 2025, for some reason, we've taken several steps back as far as progress goes. I think we know why, but I can't talk about it on these forums.

The pride events were a recognition, an acknowledgement that we were normal and welcome into society. Now without it, we don't feel welcome in the game. What will we do now? Play a game where we're not welcome? We need pride events to reassure us that we're a normality within the community.

This verdict will haunt runescape for as long as it's not a part of the community. We're here, we're queer, and we're a part of your player base. If you don't favor it, don't play the game.

RuneScape Cancels Pride Month Event

RuneScape and developer Jagex are taking heat from both fans and employees over its decision to cancel the game's Pride Month festivities for 2025, citing the "changing reality." The massively popular MMORPG has been one of the most recognizable games in the online space for more than twenty years since its initial debut in 2001. RuneScape has undergone plenty of changes since its launch, rolling out three different main versions and even introducing Old School RuneScape to revive a beloved past iteration of the game. However, one recent change has many fans upset at Jagex.

Since 2022, the "Tales of Pride" event has been a staple of RuneScape's annual calendar, celebrating the game's expansive LGBTQ+ community with a variety of in-game perks. Each year's event brought special cosmetics as part of the event, including the "Banner of Pride" and expanded last year to add multiple recent designs for the Shirt of Pride and Blossom Crown. The game has also featured community-run "Pride Parades" each year in June, featuring hundreds of players marching through the game's world. Now, Jagex has revealed it is shelving its new Celebration Month content
