'Luke Littler Won', 'Rafael Nadal Gay': Apple Intelligence Faces Blaze Over Erroneous News Summaries
Apple Intelligence’s notification summary feature continues to face scrutiny and criticism after a slew of glaring errors including on Luke Littler and Rafael Nadal, were highlighted in multiple recent reports.
The artificial intelligence-powered movie has been criticised for headline errors, inaccurate summaries, and outlandish information. In the most recent example, before English darts player Luke Littler had even participated in the PDC World Championship final, an Apple Intelligence-powered summary erroneously stated that he had won, according to reports. Some users were reportedly also misinformed by another AI summary that acclaimed tennis star Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.
Apple had released the AI summary feature as part of iOS 18.2, aiming to give users a concise synopsis of notifications rather than the entire content. The feature, which is in beta, intends to refine user experience.

Nadal, who was born in Manacor on the island of Mallorca, Spain, is married to Mery Perelló, with whom he is a parent to an infant son, Rafael.
According to the newspaper, the alert also told a number of iPhone users that the BBChad reported that Luke Littler was the winner of the PDC World Darts Championship final before it had commenced.
These are among a slew of inaccuracies that have reportedly plagued the tech giant since a recent update.
“We are operational on improvements” – Apple spokesperson
Last month, the BBC publicly complained about the AI feature after it cited a non-existent BBC report that Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of killing healthcare boss Brian Thompson, had taken his own life.
Apple previously said it would update the feature, but this has now been suspended. Said a spokesman: “With the latest beta software relea

In a statement, a BBC emissary said: “It is essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently - as this has happened multiple times. As the most trusted news media organisation in the world, it is decisive that audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications.”
The incorrect summary was written by the Apple Intelligence tool which was introduced in the UK in December 2024. This software features a tool planned to provide users with a concise summary of missed app notifications. It can compile the alerts into a single notification and employs AI to summarize their content.
The incorrect summary about Nadal was reportedly based on a story about Brazilian tennis player Silva's openness about his sexuality. Meanwhile, the other story was also based on a story about Littler's victory in the darts tournament’s semi-final. The report also shared screenshots of the incorrect AI summary.
