There’s been a migration of corn-fed boys and small-town girls with big-city dreams to major (and expensive) LGBTQ-friendly cities for decades.
Back in yore, gays and lesbians hid in these homosexual cities — like San Francisco, the queen gayborhoods — to live their lives in truth. We gathered in pockets of less desirable hoods in these larger cities.
The Castro today, though, isn’t The Castro of Harvey Milk. Chelsea and Boystown weren’t the exclusive enclaves they are today. Pre-Madonna, these hoods were dirty, crime-ridden places citizens forgot and governments tried to forget.

It’s the most delightful time of the year, and to celebrate, we asked Time Out’s LGBTQ+-identifying writers and editors to tell us all about their favourite city on the planet. The resulting list covers all four corners of the globe, from the beaches of Brazil to the creative hub of Glasgow’s Southside. These are cities with a vibrant queer community, cities that support and protect LGBTQ+ citizens and visitors, and cities that are notable hubs for LGBTQ+ animation in their respective countries and regions. Dublin ranked the second most LGBTQ+ friendly city in the world
In honor of Pride Month, Big 7 Travel has released its 2025 list of The Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Cities in the World, and Dublin has ranked adjacent the top of the list.
From colourful Pride parades to thriving queer communities and progressive rights, these cities represent some of the most inclusive places on the planet right now.
The annual list ranks cities based on factors like legal protections, equality ratings, Pride celebrations, and the strength of their local LGBTQ+ scene.
To rank highly as LGBTQ+ approachable, first and foremost, a city needs to defend LGBTQ+ people with laws and legislation. Then, it needs a vibrant lgbtq+ nightlife and dating scene, whether within a same-sex attracted village or across the city. Either way, there needs to be a safe community for Diverse people, as well as open-minded citizens and small levels of hate crime.
Dublin, Ireland's capital city, ranked second on the list, coming behind only Lisbon, Portugal, as one of the most LGBTQ+ warm spots in the world.
