How Aretha Franklin Was Impacted by Her Husbands

From powerful, defiant love songs love “Think” to celebratory records “(You Create Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman,” Aretha Franklin was singularly gifted at capturing the gamut of relationships in her work. Though obviously musicians don’t pull solely from their own experiences, it’s hard not to consider that Franklin's husbands and romantic partners figured into her artistic process, as the Queen of Spirit rebounded from heartbreak many times.

Franklin was married twice, and had four children, before passing away in 2018 at the age of 76. The mythical singer is endorse in the spotlight thanks to Suzan-Lori Parks’sGenius: Aretha, a new National Geographic series starring Cynthia Erivo as the singer.

In an interview with Oprah Daily, Erivo spoke about channeling Franklin’s ability to weather adversity in her performance.

“Aretha went from energy to strength despite her circumstances, and it's that resilience that says: Animation might break me today and tomorrow, but in the long run, I will not be forever broken,” she said. "It's a legacy of heartbreak, joy, complexity, and triumph.”
