Andrew Garfield under fire over 'gay without the physical act' comment
Actor Andrew Garfield is facing an online backlash for saying he is "a gay man" but "without the physical act".
The Spider-Man star plays a homosexual with AIDS in a new show of the play Angels In America at the National Theatre in London.
During a Q&A panel, the 33-year-old actor said he is "a gay guy right now, just without the physical act", and said he better understood his character by watching RuPaul's Drag Race.
The backlash came swift across social media, with users accusing Garfield of being "oblivious to what's coming out of your mouth".
"Andrew Garfield playing a gay guy on TV doesn't suddenly mean he understands oppression," one user wrote.
"You are a talented guy, but seem to be completely oblivious to what is coming out of your mouth," wrote another.
According to Gay Times magazine, Garfield explained that he was actually not gay, but he felt gay.
"As far as I know, I am not a queer man," the actor said.
"Maybe I'll have an awakening later in my being, which I'm sure will be wonderful and I'll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I'm secluded to my area."

Angels in America is widely regarded as one of the most vital plays of the 20th century.
The two-part production is almost eight hours extended and explores attitudes to race, politics and sexuality in the US during the Aids crisis in the 1980s.

"The intention [in my comments] was to talk to that, utter to my long for to play this part to the best of my ability and to fully immerse myself in a society that I adore."
Andrew has previously said he was hesitant to take the role, questioning what "right" he had to play an iconic gay personality, but was convinced when the play's writer, Tony Kushner, personally asked him to do so.
Twitter users had mixed views about the row.

‘Andrew Garfield Gay’ Is Trending Because Of A Viral Picture, And We Need To Unpack This

Earlier on in this fine 2023 summer (if you can summon it that), I was heading on holiday with friends when I overheard the most ludicrous conversation. ‘Bro, I’m telling you now if you ask me to put sun cream on you it’s not happening, okay?’ one of our guy friends declared to another as we sat down on the plane. ‘What, you’re not going to give me a little rub down to stop your guy from burning?’ the other replied jokingly. ‘Seriously bro, don’t question me, I’m warning you,’ he returned.
It was a seemingly light-hearted if-not-ludicrous conversation, but lo and behold when it came to applying that ever-necessary sun scream to any hard-to-reach areas, none of the guys asked each other to help out – even when us girls weren’t around. They would rather set fire, in record European temperatures no less, than ask another gentleman to put sun cream on them.
But seriously, it’s a concrete thing with the men, the old sun cream saga. And its perhaps why Andrew Garfield is the centre of rather ludicrous deb
