Straight Women Love to Scan Gay Romance Novels

When my Miami friend Neil Plakcy, author of over 50 gay novels, told me that the majority of his sales were to mature straight women, I was floored. I contemplate myself savvy about women my age, but it never occurred to me that they would be interested in gay treasure making.

Neil, who lives in Hollywood, Florida, about 20 miles north of Miami, said that mature women love to read about men having sex with men because they can fantasize about their bodies moving together. “If one man is sexy, two are even sexier. Just like straight men view lesbian porn for titillation, straight women like to read about gay sex.”

Neil has been writing lgbtq+ novels for over a decade. His thoughts and observations have been formed through thousands of interviews, conversations, and research. Neil also said women are prime targets for gay passion books because they are tired of the matching old romance stories, which can be very predictable. “After decades of reading love stories, women wish more, they want hefty emotion, tons of lust, and lots of titillation. The world of same-sex attracted romance novels is, if not quite as vast as the world of m/f romance, still quite expansive. Are you looking for a royal-commoner romance? A fake marriage? Something dark and gritty, or something that’s the literary equivalent of a basket of puppies? Whatever it is that floats your romance boat, I guarantee there’s an m/m romance out there that will satisfy. In making this list, I’ve highlighted as many #ownvoices authors as possible. There’s a misconception that the only people who write m/m intimacy are straight women, and while it’s true that some of the biggest names in queer romance are vertical women, there are also dozens of queer men writing fantastic gay passion. But because of the biases and shortcomings of publishing (and a slew of other complicated factors), it’s linear women who often get the most recognition in the genre.
